First let me say that I LOVE this series. I read voraciously and have read tons of paranormal series, but this is the one I reach for again and again "between reads". I just love the character development and dynamic, and the plots are not predictable. I have re-read this series so many times over the years I've lost count! Love the Mercy Thompson series too BTW.
Although you could technically read this without reading the prequel, really, the prequel is so worth it! It is the story of how Charles and Anna meet and become mates, and it's the foundation for every book that comes after. Arguably, the short story should simply have been the beginning of this book (book 1) and have the book be that much longer, but that's not how it happend. At one point the short story was offered on amazon for kindle seperately from the On the Prowl anthology for less money, but unfortunately not anymore. I know because I actually ended up owning both the anthology and the seperate short story on my kindle and didn't even realize it until I did an "item search" one day! Guess I liked it even more than I knew! I don't know if other ebook stores compatible with kindle have it ([...], mobiepocket, [...], etc...anything in mobiepocket format is usually compatible with kindle). The anthology is actually a very good one, well worth the investment even if you are only interested in the Alpha and Omega short story. Of course, the library is always an option (I usually get my anthologies from there and then if I really enjoy them, consider adding them to my kindle library - this was a definate add!).
Cry Wolf picks up pretty much at the end of the Alpha and Omega novella and continues with further plot and character development as Charles and Anna learn more about one another and deal with the growing dynamics of their new found relationship while dealing with outside forces and obstacles. It's just an enjoyable read and well worth it, especially if you enjoy the Mercy Thompsom series (also worth re-reading). I'm just a bit more enamored with Charles and Anna and hate that the 3rd book in this series is due out in fall of 2011 (originally it was due out in fall of 2010)! Argh! Write faster Ms. Briggs!
